The star of young Israeli pianist’s Nitai Hershkovits (1988) started to shine out of the blue in 2012, when Avishai Cohen introduced him in his duo album Duende. In the meantime, he made another two albums with the popular bassist and gained enough self-confidence to go solo, showing interest for analogue electronic (presented on his debut album I Asked You A Question) as well as for acoustic solo recitals, like the one he will have in Belgrade.

Nitai studied jazz and classical music in Israel and was awarded the highest scholarship given by the America-Israel Cultural Foundation (AICF) four years in a row. He recorded or performed with a number of artists, including Robert Sadin, Theo Bleckmann, Matt Penman, Mark Turner, Marcus Gilmore, Ben Monder, Jorge Rossy, Gilad Hekselman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Daniel Zamir, Ilan Salem, Avi Lebovich, Georgia Anne Muldrow… He is a regular member in the groups of Oded Tzur and Ari Hoenig as well as the Time Grove trio with Eyal Talmudi (saxophone, clarinet) and Rejoicer (keys, drums programming). In 2016, he moved to New York and soon became very active in the club scene.

Wolfert Brederode Trio

Pianist and composer Wolfert Brederode (1974) returns to the Festival after making an amazing appearance with his quartet in 2009, and another in 2013 with the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet. His music features a refined and focused touch, concern for natural flow, openness to all kinds of music, and his relentless search for new horizons. In Belgrade he presents the new trio with the highly lyrical album Black Ice released on ECM Records in spring 2016 behind them.

Beside recording albums under his own name in trios, quartets and quintets, he recorded with other groups such as Nimbus, the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet and the Susanne Abbuehl Group and in a duo with the drummer Joost Lijbaart. Wolfert has furthermore worked with notable artists such as David Liebman, Jeanne Lee, Arve Henriksen, Mark Feldman, Wolfgang Puschnig, Ernst Reijseger, Claudio Puntin, Tore Brunborg, Mats Eilertsen, Harry Sokal, Ack van Rooyen, Eric Ineke… He also contributed compositions to several theatre, dance and film productions and is a piano and ensemble teacher at the jazz departments of the conservatories of Tilburg and The Hague.

Mark Ribot & The Young Philadelphians + Strings

Ever since he first appeared as a complete unknown on Tom Waits masterpiece Rain Dogs (1985) the guitarist Marc Ribot (1954) became a guideline for what is good in music – his inspiration contributed to the music ofJohn Lurie, Elvis Costello, John Zorn, Roy Nathanson, Diana Krall, Madeleine Peyroux, Laurie Anderson, Sam Phillips… In the meantime, he managed to build an impressive solo career, brilliantly mastering various challenges – from free jazz to surf music, to “fake” Cubans, to blues. He made an unforgettable appearance at the 2011 Belgrade Jazz Festival.

His new project, Marc Ribot & The Young Philadelphians + Strings pays tribute to twin legacies: the harmolodic punk-funk of Ornette Coleman’s first Prime Time band and the optimistic pulse of 1970s Philly Soul. This is why Ribot enlisted two former Prime Time members, bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and drummer G. Calvin Weston, both Philadelphia natives, along with guitarist Mary Halvorson (her substitute in Belgrade will be Al McDowel, piccolo bass) as well as the three-piece string section for that sweet, disco funk flavour.

Kris Davis and Billy Drummond

“Davis lives in each note that she plays‚ I consider her an honorary descendant of Cecil Taylor.” (Vijay Iyer). Canadian pianist and composer Kris Davis (1980) was born in Vancouver. Studying classical music through the Royal Conservatory in Canada she developed passion for jazz in the school jazz band. Later she studied jazz piano and composition in Toronto, New York and Paris. Today, she teaches at the School for Improvised Music in New York.

She was highlighted as “One of 25 for the future” by Downbeat magazine; she released albums mainly on Clean Feed and Fresh Sound labels, presenting herself in various settings, from solo recitals to octet music. Main collaborations: Ingrid Laubrock, Julian Lage, Angelica Sanchez, Tony Malaby, Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, John Hollenbeck, Michael Formanek, Mat Maneri, Trevor Dunn , Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Revis, Jon Irabagon, Craig Taborn, Marcus Gilmore, Tim Berne, Don Byron, Mary Halvorson… Her current album Duopoly features duos with eight notable musicians, including her Belgrade partner, the famous American drummer Billy Drummond.

Kosztolánszki Trio

Under the leadership of the talented 17-year-old Dominik Kosztolánszki a group of young musicians started to work together during their studies at ETUD, as well as in Lamantin Jazz Festival camp (professors Gábor Winand and János Ávéd). They performed together in various formats (Kosztolánszki Quintet, Mitsakes, Kormányos Quartet). They are mostly inspired by the work of John Coltrane (especially in his later albums Love Supreme, The John Coltrane Quartet Plays) and among their role models are Kenny Garrett, Joshua Redman and Wayne Shorter, as well as Hungarian artists Mihály Dresch, Gábor Winand and Elsa Valle. They maintain a traditional combo ensemble way of playing, giving considerable space to improvisation, with excursions into free jazz.
